1. Show Up on Time

First impressions are the most important impressions of all. And let’s face it, you never get the chance to do them over again. With that being said, you cannot arrive late. You cannot arrive late and make a good first impression, it just can’t happen. If you want to show her parents that you are a good person, then you must first arrive on time—or better yet, a few minutes early.

2. Dress to Impress

You’re meeting her parents for the first time, so the last thing you want to do is show up looking like you just left the gym. Everyone is going to be looking sharp, so you need to bring your A-game. Win them from the first second they see you.

3. Be Clean & Fresh

It’s a shame that we have to write this one out, but believe us, not everyone realizes how important this one is. You’re undoubtedly going to be a little nervous, which unfortunately entails perspiration. Get a cool shower right before heading out to your first meet with her parents. It doesn’t matter how well-spoken you are, you must also be clean, fresh, and well put together.

4. Address Them Appropriately

It’s Mr. and Mrs. unless they have told you otherwise. Don’t walk in and call them by their first names, and definitely refrain from saying the word “dude.” Show your respect and address them appropriately.

5. Have Great Table Manners

It’s one of the simplest ways to win yourself some brownie points. You would be surprised how many people ruin their chances by chewing with their mouth open, belching, or playing with their cell phone while the food is on the table. Show her parents that you have great etiquette by following the table manners your mom taught you when you were young.

6. Treat Your Woman with Respect

This is the best time to show her parents how much you love and respect their daughter. You need to pull out all stops here and show them how much of a gentleman you are—just like when you’re on a date.

7. Consume Everything Moderately

It doesn’t matter if it’s food or alcohol, never overdo it. It doesn’t matter if you can put down ten burgers in one sitting or you’re known for drinking a bottle of tequila like its water, now is certain not the time to show off. Pounding drinks and inhaling food might have impressed your frat brothers in college, but it’s not going to win you any points with her parents.

8. Watch Your Body Language

Sit up straight, maintain good eye contact, and never slouch. Poor body language can cost you some major points. Believe it or not, her parents might read your poor posture as laziness and insecurity.

9. Give a Genuine Compliment & Say Thanks

It is good manners to give mom and dad a compliment when arriving. And if they’ve prepared dinner, compliment them on how delicious it was. Always end the night by saying thank you and letting them know you had a great evening.

1. Get Touchy Feely

Although you and your girlfriend might be on those terms behind closed doors, you don’t want to overstep the boundaries in front of her parents. Never cross the line in front of her parents.

2. Complain About the Food

Okay, so maybe mom’s burgers were the driest in town, or dad’s spaghetti wasn’t what you’re used to, but it doesn’t matter. They worked hard to prepare a meal for you, so the last thing you want to do is complain about it. Do your best to find something nice to say about something they’ve prepared.

3. Act Fake

Although being rude is a big no-no, so is acting fake in hopes of impressing them. If you are giving fake compliments, they’re going to notice, which will cost you big in the end. Nobody wants to be in the company of a phony.

4. Curse

Under no circumstance should you ever curse in front of her parents. Even if dad’s favorite word starts with an “F,” it doesn’t give you the right to use it in front of them.

5. Boast

It’s wonderful that you put yourself through college and made it to the top of your class, and it’s great that you own a successful company, but constant bragging is going to make you look shallow and arrogant. Let them get to know you layer by layer and let your success speak for itself.

6. Drink Too Much

Before, nor during, the meeting with her parents do you want to drink too much alcohol. Consuming too much will make you say or do things you would normally not say or do. It’s great to have a drink to loosen up, but consuming too many is a recipe for disaster, especially when you’re meeting her parents for the first time.

Just like any important meeting in life, you need to have the right attitude and good manners. Follow these simple dos and don’ts from our King of Prussia matchmakers and you’ll have a successful meet with her parents. You’ve already won her over, so winning over mom and dad should not be that hard, as long as you show them the respect they deserve.
